Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
