Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
